Sedation Dentistry

Often people avoid getting the life and face saving dental care they should have because they are afraid to go to the dentist. Thankfully, dental fears born in childhood, fear of gagging, claustrophobia, fear of pain can all be dealt with today using oral sedation.

Take a small pill and safely relax your way worry free through y ears of dental work, often in only one or two visits. And you’ll have little or no memory of the experience! It’s called “Sedation Dentistry” - and it may well be the greatest advance ever made towards truly relaxed and anxiety-free dentistry!

Sedation dentistry allows us to fix years of neglect and worry while you are comfortably relaxed and unaware. This means you can quickly restore your smile and health in one or two dental visits - with no worries!

If you have dental fears or hate going to the dentist, you will now find your visit at the dentist to be relaxing and enjoyable. Best of all, you’ll be saving your smile and perhaps even your life!

Frequently Asked Questions about Sedation Dentistry

Q. During dental treatment will I be uncomfortable?

A. No. Not only will you be pleasantly sedated, you will also be anesthetized with local anesthesia to deaden all areas of treatment.

Q. How sedated will I be?

A. You will not be unconscious. Sedation is not general anesthesia. But you will be very sedated and very relaxed.

Q. Will someone be monitoring me?

A. Yes. A staff member will always be watching over you. Constant monitoring of your vital signs throughout your treatment is performed.

Q. How long will the sedation last?

A. This is determined by the proposed treatment. However the average range is from two to six hours.

Q. If I’m just a little bit nervous, do I need to be fully sedated?

A. No. There are lighter levels of sedation using less intensive medications or nitrous oxide. These strategies aim to create “anxiolysis” or the reduction of anxiety. For those less anxious to begin with, these strategies can be very relaxing and just enough to help you make it through otherwise routine dental procedures.

Q. Will I need an escort to come with me and take me home?

A. Yes! Because you are sedated we will require that you have someone assist you. They will need to drive you to and away from the dental office. You will also want them to monitor you for a few hours after returning home.

Q. How can I know if sedation is right for me?

A. People who are good candidates for sedation dentistry are people who are afraid to go the dentist (dental phobic). These people are those who have had bad experiences in their youth, or don’t like shots, or who can’t relax during dental procedures. Sedation is also ideal for people with difficult dental problems, or who gag easily or who prefer to have a lot of dental treatment performed in shorter amounts of time.
